Weighing a galaxy bar in the lens Q 2237 + 0305

چکیده
In the gravitational lens system Q2237+0305 the cruciform quasar image geometry is twisted by ten degrees by the lens effect of a bar in the lensing galaxy. This effect can be used to measure the mass of the bar. We construct a new lensing model for this system with a power-law elliptical bulge and a Ferrers bar. The observed ellipticity of the optical isophotes of the galaxy leads to a nearly isothermal elliptical profile for the bulge with a total quasar magnification of 16 −4. We measure a bar mass of 7.5± 1.5× 10 h 75 M⊙ in the region inside the quasar images.

Gravitational lensing in galaxy redshift surveys
Gravitationally-lensed quasars are both valuable (individually and statistically) and rare. They are mostly discovered through time-consuming re-imaging of known quasars, but can also be found spectroscopically in galaxy redshift surveys. Q 2237+0305 (Huchra et al. 1985) was found in this manner, but remains the only such discovery. Kochanek (1992) predicted that ∼ 1 in 10 redshifts would yield...
متن کاملDetection of chromatic microlensing in Q 2237 + 0305 A
We present narrow band images of the gravitational lens system Q 2237+0305 made with the Nordic Optical Telescope in eight different filters covering the wavelength interval 3510-8130 Å. Using PSF photometry fitting we have derived the difference in magnitude vs. wavelength between the 4 images of Q 2237+0305. At λ = 4110 Å, the wavelength range covered by the Strömgren-v filter coincides with ...
متن کاملThe Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment Monitoring of Qso 2237+0305 *
We present results from 2 years of monitoring of Huchra's lens (QSO 2237+0305) with the 1.3 m Warsaw telescope on Las Campanas, Chile. Photometry in the V band was done using a newly developed method for image subtraction. Reliable subtraction without Fourier division removes all complexities associated with the presence of a bright lensing galaxy. With positions of lensed images adopted from H...
متن کاملUsing galaxy redshift surveys to detect gravitationally-lensed quasars
Gravitationally-lensed quasars can be discovered as a by-product of galaxy redshift surveys. Lenses discovered spectroscopically in this way should require less observational effort per event than those found in dedicated lens surveys. Further, the lens galaxies should be relatively nearby, facilitating a number of detailed observations that are impossible for the more common high-redshift lens...
متن کاملThe Dust - To - Gas Ratio of z > 0 Galaxies Through Gravitational Lenses
We report the detection of differential gas column densities in three gravitational lenses, MG 0414+0534, HE 1104−1805, and PKS 1830−211. Combined with the previous differential column density measurements in B 1600+434 and Q 2237+0305 and the differential extinction measurements of these lenses, we probe the dust-to-gas ratio of a small sample of cosmologically distant normal galaxies. We obta...
